Q: What key dates should I keep in mind for Pathfinders Winter Institute applications?

Q: I'm interested in attending Pathfinders and I am a public school teacher. What do I need to do?

Q: I'm a public school teacher from Rhode Island and am interested in applying for the Code.org course (Computer Science Fundamentals). What do I need to do?

All Rhode Island teachers who apply for the Code.org course (Computer Science Fundamentals) will need to follow a separate application process, and you can start here. This Code.org course will enable Rhode Island-only teachers to benefit from a grant which covers 100% of the cost of participation. This Code.org course offering is reserved for Rhode Island-based public school teachers and will be taught by the University of Rhode Island.

Q: I'm a public school teacher and am interested in applying for the Code.org course (Computer Science Fundamentals) but I am not from Rhode Island. What do I need to do?

This course is only offered to Rhode Island-based teachers. If you are from another state, please apply for another course.

Q: I'm getting an error when applying.

Q: Will I receive a confirmation once I apply?

Yes, you will receive a confirmation email once you successfully complete your application. All applications will immediately be placed in a default waitlist while they are being reviewed for acceptance into the Pathfinders Winter Institute. The deadline for program acceptance is Dec 16, 2019. Several PD providers will review and accept teacher applications on a rolling basis. The sooner you apply, the better your odds of being accepted into your course of choice.

Q: I'm a teacher at a private/international school—am I eligible to apply?

Applications from teachers at US private schools (including parochial schools) and international schools will be accepted IF there are open spots available in any given course once initial K-12 US public school teacher applications have been reviewed. This determination will be made after Dec 16th, 2019. Please note that the teachers at private schools or international schools would not be eligible for match funding from Infosys Foundation USA and would be responsible for 100% of the fees. The cost to attend the Pathfinders Winter Institute is $2,341 includes airfare/train, airport transfers, meals, accommodation, tuition, and post-training support (where applicable). International school teachers will also be responsible for their own airfare.

Q: How long will it take until I am accepted?

The deadline for program acceptance is Dec 16, 2019. Several PD providers will review and accept teacher applications on a rolling basis. The sooner you apply, the better your odds of being accepted into your course of choice.

Acceptances will be made on a rolling basis, considering:

  • Teachers from high-needs schools
  • Teachers from schools outside major urban centers
  • Teachers at schools with significant under-represented student populations
  • Teachers new to teaching CS and making and
  • Districts demonstrating significant commitment to CS/making by sending multiple teachers or counselors.

Based on demand, we may not be able to accept all teachers who apply to Pathfinders. Our last day for accepting teachers into a Pathfinders course is Dec 16th, 2019. It is possible that you may not receive notification of acceptance until that date, though you will likely hear back much sooner.

Q: Is there a fee for attending Pathfinders Winter Institute 2020?

Pathfinders has been designed to make it possible for teachers to receive high quality professional development at no cost to you.

  • The cost to attend Pathfinders for any of the courses is $2,341.
  • Code.org Computer Science Fundamentals will be free for Rhode Island Teachers after 100% grant funding from Infosys Foundation USA.
  • CS Awesome course is free for the first 25 US public school teachers after 100% grant funding from Infosys Foundation USA and Google.
  • For teachers raising funds through their schools, districts or PTA, Infosys Foundation USA is funding 70% ($1,638.70) of these fees. You are responsible for raising the remaining 30% ($702.30) fees for attending Pathfinders by working with your school, district, or PTA.
  • For teachers raising funds through DonorsChoose.org, you will receive a 3X match offer from Infosys Foundation USA tripling each donation you receive. The amount to raise will be $2,216. This cost includes transportation (flight/train), lodging and conference registration costs. This cost does not include meals. When you arrive at the conference, you will receive a $125 Visa Gift Card from Infosys Foundation USA to be used for your meals during the conference and will not need to fundraise this amount.

Q: What is included in the Pathfinders fees?

Airfare, train fare, airport transfers, conference meals, accommodation, tuition, and post-training support (where applicable) are included in the total fees to attend Pathfinders Winter Institute 2020.

For those teachers creating a DonorsChoose.org project to fundraise to attend the Pathfinders Winter Institute, the cost of your package will be $2,216. This cost includes the following transportation, accommodation, tuition, conference registration fee. This cost does not include meals. When you arrive at the Pathfinders Winter Institute, you will receive a $125 Visa Gift Card from Infosys Foundation USA to be used for your meals. You will not need to fundraise this amount.

Q: How do I fund the remaining portion of the fee?

Once you receive an email confirmation that you have been accepted into the Pathfinders Winter Institute, you can pursue one of the following 2 options to secure your funding:

(1) For School/District/PTA funded teachers - Infosys Foundation USA is funding 70% of these fees for teachers who are raising funds through their schools/districts/PTA. You are responsible for raising the remaining 30% fees for attending the Pathfinders Winter Institute by working with your school, district, or PTA. See Step 5A in How to Apply.

(2) For teachers raising funds through DonorsChoose.org - Create a project on DonorsChoose.org and fundraise with matched donations from Infosys Foundation USA. You will receive a 3X match offer from Infosys Foundation USA tripling each donation you receive – that means a $100 donation becomes a $300 donation. See Step 5B in How to Apply.

Q: I am a teacher living in Rhode Island. Will my Pathfinders fee be reduced since I am driving to Providence and not flying?

No. To make it possible for any teacher to apply to Pathfinders, an estimated average transportation cost per teacher was standardized and bundled across all participants, so as not to penalize teachers traveling from distant or remote locations. Those driving to Providence, RI will receive a parking pass for your vehicle for self-parking.

Q: How will I know my funding is approved (or not yet approved)?

Once your funding is approved, an email will be sent confirming receipt. You can log in to the application system with your account credentials at any time to review the status of your application.

Q: Does Pathfinders Winter Institute replace Pathfinders Summer Institute?

No, the Pathfinders Winter Institute is an additional offering to the Pathfinders Summer Institute which traditionally takes place at Indiana University, Bloomington.

Q: Where will Pathfinders Winter Institute classes take place?

Courses will take place at the University of Rhode Island downtown campus and at the Infosys Design Hub in Providence, RI. Classes will be assigned to rooms roughly two weeks prior to the event start date based on size and program needs.

Q: Who will take care of my travel arrangements?

The Pathfinders Team will contact you about your preference for flight/train reservation. This should occur beginning the week of Dec 1st after you’ve been notified that all your funding has been confirmed. Travel will be arranged from your home town to Providence, RI. You will have 24 hours to review and approve your flights/train arrangements. Airport/Train Station ground transfers to Providence will also be arranged.

About 2 weeks prior to the start of the Pathfinders Winter Institute, you will receive an email with everything you need to know before arriving. You may also update your room preferences at this time. Given the immersive and all-inclusive experience, you do not need a car during Pathfinders Winter Institute. Scheduled airport/train station bus service will be arranged.

Q: What time do I need to arrive at Pathfinders Winter Institute?

The Pathfinders Winter Institute will begin on Sunday, February 16th with afternoon check-in at our registration desk at the hotel booked for you in Providence, RI. Registration will be followed by Opening Ceremony on the evening of Sunday February 16th. An indicative agenda is uploaded within ‘Agenda’ section.

Q: Where will I stay?

  • All teachers from outside of Rhode Island will be staying at a hotel located in downtown Providence. Hotel detail will be provided a few weeks prior to the event.
  • If you are traveling from Rhode Island to partake in Pathfinders Winter Institute, you can opt in or out for a hotel room.
  • Each teacher will have a roommate. If you selected a specific roommate during the registration process, we will do everything we can to assure you are paired together. If you know someone you would like to room with, please email Pathfinders@infosysFoundationUSAEvents.org with your roommate request by January 1, 2020. If you have not selected a roommate, we will pair you based on gender and state. Formal roommate matching will occur closer to the event.
  • Further information about the hotels will be included in a 'Know Before You go' email that the Pathfinders Team will send 2 weeks prior to the event, in which you will find the hotel you’ve been assigned, transportation instructions, check-in details, roommate information and classroom locations.

Q: What is the weather like and what is dress code?

The weather in mid-February in Providence, RI averages 26°F - 40°F. Dress Code for the Pathfinders Winter Institute is casual and we recommend dressing in layers to stay warm in winter but adjust for temperatures that may fluctuate in the URI classrooms.
