Taking Coding To School Children

In December 2017, buoyed by the success of the previous year’s Hour of Code event, students and volunteers from Trivandrum Development Centre (DC), Kerala, India participated in the Hour of Code. This event was organized by volunteers of Vijnana, the academic track of Sanjeevani, the employee-driven CSR group of Trivandrum DC. The organizing team invited students from Grades 5 through 10, from Prathibha Poshini and Government Fort School to the event. Both these schools are beneficiaries of Vijnana’s weekend classes.

After an introduction to coding, students were given a computer where they wrote their first lines of code. Volunteers guided the process, explained concepts, answered questions, clarified doubts, and optimized the code that was written.

A 30-minute online quiz turned out to be a big hit amongst the students. This was followed by the winners and participants being awarded prizes, certificates, and chocolates. The event was an excellent experience for students who were exposed to a wide array of concepts around coding.
