Infosys Foundation USA to Increase Computer Science and Maker Education Reach to Two Million Teachers

Infosys Foundation USA commits to doubling its reach over the next five years

New York, NY - September 15, 2020

The Infosys Foundation USA announced today that it will provide an additional one million K-12 teachers across the United States with high-quality computer science and maker education over the next five years. Since its inception, the Foundation has reached over 1 million teachers and nearly 23 million students across the U.S. Through this new announcement, the Foundation plans to double its reach.

As an immediate response to the unprecedented challenges that teachers are facing during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Foundation will focus on several strategic programs that directly respond to the needs identified by educators who are working in new teaching environments. These program areas include:

  • Professional development to provide K-12 educators with the training and resources they need to feel comfortable bringing computer science and maker education into their classrooms, in-person or virtually
  • Content and curriculum support to expand access to vetted, quality classroom content and lesson plans
  • Remote learning workshops to train teachers on popular virtual teaching platforms
  • A "Teacher Tech Corps" mentor program to help educators navigate technologies used in curriculum delivery and troubleshoot tech challenges in the classroom

The Infosys Foundation USA’s commitment comes as K-12 schools across the U.S. reopen with a fully or partially virtual model for the 20-21 academic year. Teachers need additional support to ensure they are meaningfully reaching all of their students in this new learning environment.

"For far too long, teachers have been on the front line without the proper support or resources they need to do their job effectively. While they innovated when COVID-19 struck last spring, they now valiantly return to hybrid classrooms that require their imagination, skills and perseverance. The Foundation is proud to support these heroes with the critical digital tools they need to inspire the young minds who are ready and eager to learn," said Kate Maloney, Executive Director, Infosys Foundation USA.

"With the world shifting to virtual work over the past six months, we have seen strain and structural changes on all industries, not least of all education," said Ravi Kumar S, Chairperson, Infosys Foundation USA. "I am proud that our Foundation is redoubling its efforts to support educators to ensure that they have the tools and support they need for years to come."

In April 2020, the Infosys Foundation USA rapidly responded to school closures by curating free computer science and maker education content for students, teachers and families on the Pathfinders Online Institute, its digital learning platform. This new funding announcement builds on the Infosys Foundation USA’s commitment to expanding computer science and maker education across the U.S. and its support of K-12 public school teachers.
